Will a 5 speed transmission work?

I have an '89 Festiva L with a 4 speed manual transmission. Is it
possible to put in a 5 speed transmission from a later model without
too much difficulty? With gas prices near $2 a gallon I want to get
even better gas milage (although 39 mpg on the highway isn't too bad)
and be able to hear myself think over the roar of the engine at high
speeds.

Yes, 5 speed is litterly a bolt in swap! Cheap, if you can dom the work
yourself!
