Discussion:
My '93 stalled - can I do a simple diagnostic

I've got the Haynes Manual, but I can't seem to figure out where the
diagnostic connectors are located. I've got a automatic '93. The car
stalls when I come to a stop. First time, I come to a stop at a red and it
stalls. Fortunately I could restart the car and drive off.

Second time it happened a few days later, drop off my friend so he could
pick up his car and I wait there and the car stalls again (can't remember
if I put the car in neutral or not). Anyways, it doesn't start for another
10-15 mins and then I was going to give it one more try and the car
started and I drove off.

Any suggestions or is there a way for me to figure it out from the Check
Engine lights on the dash (as it says in the manual)?

thnx

The white plastic test connectors are tucked behind the coil in the picture
below.

You can just see them between the strut tower and the brake master cylinder.

From the Haynes manual, section 6-6:
To use your check engine light to display the code, you short the single wire
connector, STI to ground. If no codes are stored, the check engine light will
come on for a few moments then go out. If any malfunction has been detected, the
light will blink the first digit(s) of the code at a long interval(s) and then
blink the second digit of the code at short interval(s).

Let us know what code you get and we'll look it up.

Hoping it's something simple, like a clogged fuel filter, or loose vacuum hose.

Thanks for the help Mark. One more stupid question. I found the connectors,
but I see foour connectors. 3 of them are bunched together (a 1-pin,
2-pin, and 6 pin connector) and they are all black. Then further up the
wiring, there a 1-pin connector that is white. So which is the STI
terminal and which is the GND terminal.

I don't know.
All my cars were '88s, and all had white connectors. The STI connector is a
single conductor connector. I'll have to check the wire color tomorrow. To
ground it I just use a jumper wire to the strut threads or some other ground, I
didn't worry about finding a ground connector. Then I check the idiot light to
count out the blinks. Check back late tomorrow.

Subject: Re: Using a code scanner, where does it plug in on Festivas?

with the ignition switch off, ground the BLACK single
prong wire connecter(by master cylinder) to the
battery. You know when you have grounded the right
wire when you turn the ignition switch to on,(without
starting the engine) and after a second the check
engine light goes out. any stored codes will then
begin to flash. pay close attention to the delay
between the long and short flashes, the long flashes
will indicate the first digit of the code, followed by
a delay, then the short flashes will indicate the
second digit of the code. Good luck! --- Dan Bogle
