My poor festiva(1990) has been having a bad month. The latest wo being
the clutch which has worsened beyond the point of putting off repair.
As I am visiting my family with access to a modest shop for the
weekend (with other plans that make time a concern), my question is
how long do you estimate it would take two people with general
mechanical prowess but no real experience with a clutch to do this
job?

Well, I did it. I replaced the clutch. For anyone interested, here’s
the rundown.
It took three afternoons of work, or about 16 hours. The hardest part
in taking it apart was getting the stabilizer bar off the wheel hubs.
Dropping the transmission wasn’t so bad. Two people lying under the
vehicle can just lift it out without a jack. Putting everything back
together went pretty smoothly. The hardest part there was putting the
driveaxels back in. They can be a little stubborn. The Haynes manual
has the step for disconnecting the reverse light switch before taking
the starter off, but it’s much easier after. Also, when putting the
gear assembly for the speedometer back in, it’s best to connect the
cable to the assembly first. Those are the main things I remember
about the whole ordeal.
